3. Japanese Spitz

The Japanese Spitz is a relatively new dog breed but has become increasingly popular over the years due to its great personality and overall even temperament. While cute and friendly toward people, they also make surprisingly good watchdogs. Their bark is extremely loud compared to their size, and they have the desire to be alert and protect their family. Even though they are small, the Japanese Spitz has plenty of energy and will need some exercise daily. The Japanese were very fond of her and gave her an Akita puppy as a parting gift after she visited the country. The Shiba Inu is an ancient Japanese breed originating over 2000 years ago. Despite nearly going extinct in World War 2, the breed recovered and is now quite popular worldwide and undoubtedly the most famous Japanese dog breed. The Shiba was originally used for hunting small animals in mountainous regions, making them highly nimble, agile, and alert. The high prey drive can certainly still be seen in these pups today. Make sure you have a good hold on their leash because the Shiba will be ready to chase after any small animal that scurries by. Training these dogs is not always easy, as they are independent thinkers and will not always want to listen to commands. This is not to say that Shibas aren’t highly intelligent. They simply prefer doing things on their own terms. The Shiba Inu is known to be a healthy breed and usually lives for around 15 years. The oldest known Shiba died at the age of 26 in 2011 and was the oldest living dog at the time!
